AIR NZ VS V AUSTRALIA 777

I use Flight Memory to keep a record of all of my flights- every single one of them since I first flew in 1968.

For my 737th flight, I flew a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 from Portland to Spokane and had a brilliant flight.
747th was on a Qantas 747 from Melbourne to Los Angeles. The Qantas team put on a great flight- and Qantas even followed up with a souvenir 747 in the post
United Airlines turn came next with flight 757 on a B757 from DC to LAX and it was terrible.

767 is fast approaching on an Air NZ Boeing 767 Business Class from Perth to Auckland.

For my 777th flight, I have a choice between:

Air New Zealand Boeing 777 Auckland to Los Angeles

OR
V Australia Boeing 777 Sydney (or Brisbane) to Los Angeles

Who would you choose and why?

My 757th Flight on a United 757-uber fail

Thanks to Flight Memory.com and my  friend Tony (see blog post), I know exactly how many fights, miles and hours have been spent in pressurised tubes of metal flying around the world. Even after many flying hours, and despite the determined efforts by some airlines to make travel as horrible as possible,  I am still wildly excited about plane travel.

United flight 967 at gate in LAX
Flight 737 on a Boeing 737 with Southwest was a fun experience. Flight 747 on a Qantas Boeing 747 was made very special by the delightful cabin crew. Flight number 757 was United's turn on one of their aging Boeing 757s and it epitomised the worst of air travel.

In DC for a client conference, the flight back to LAX was my 757th in my life so I sought a Boeing 757 flight.
Thanks to my friend Troy, we found United flight 967 out of Washington Dulles

What went wrong with United 967:
  • Modern flying means being cramped
    My seat is in red!
There was one empty seat left on the plane-the one next to me-was I lucky or what? My seat 40C, aisle seat at the very back of the plane was not near the extra legroom room Economy Plus section nor was it in the  757s' very generous exit rows and despite United automatically wait-listing me for an upgrade it wasn't  in the First cabin either. Like most United flights, they actually had oversold it (ie sold more tickets than seats on the plane hoping enough people would not show)

  • Washington Dulles airport is a horrible trek
The airport is 41km out of downtown DC. A new metro line is being built and will be finished by 2014 but in the meantime there is a slow local bus or a coach/metro combination or taxi with bad traffic.  I opted for a cab organised by my hotel which was driven by a lovely 20 year old college guy from rural Maryland. Turned out to be driving the cab for a cousin and he did not know the way out to Dulles airport:  "Dude I am on the left land of the freeway heading toward Richmond, where should I be? "

  • Check In Friendly Fail
I never usually check luggage in but was carrying extra stuff as I was Australia bound. The Premium Economy check in line was fast but the actual human interaction was underwhelming- Mr Check In couldn't give a damn. It never ceases to amaze me how US airlines fail to support their employees to be friendly at every touch point. I know check in staff are underpaid and stressed but United needs to help them make an effort to make customers feel welcome. I get tired of the videos by United saying what a great airline they are and how happy they are we have chosen to be with them when every employee makes me feel like they resent me being there. The actual welcome aboard was friendly and the Crew even offered to stow some extra luggage in a closet for me.

  • My Technology Prowess uber fail
I had chosen to download the boarding pass to my phone.  As I stood in the security line holding my carry on bag, my passport and my cell phone, I somehow advanced my Iphone screen so the boarding pass disappeared.  There was no cell phone signal in then security area so after 7 minutes of trying and letting people in front of me, I returned upstairs. There I found cell phone coverage and re-loaded the boarding pass. I have now sworn off mobile boarding passes particularly as I have no hard copy evidence of my boarding pass

  • On my 757th flight
United Nil Interest in my 757th flight
Despite tweeting about it and mentioning it to ground and flight staff,  there was no reaction. Airlines I know are  more focused on more important matters such as safety and viability and not eccentric passenger quirks! Oh well- it excites my dork side!
  • Two Hour Weather Related Delay
The doors closed two minutes after departure time but we sat at the gate while ATC gave us  a “rerouting” to avoid nasty weather. After a while we pushed back, we lumbered slowly around the airport to come to a halt on the tarmac with a line of other planes. Soon there were planes everywhere all grounded because of the weather. After about two hours we finally were cleared for takeoff. As the rain started, we launched off into turbulent skies. To his credit, the captain briefed us 3 times while we were waiting but I think one every 15 minutes would be better -we were given a glass of water and a football show during the wait time
  • Meals run out
With the removal of catering for economy passengers on United, on a 5hr 5 minute flight, the airline sells snack boxes, chips, candies, cookies. At row 36, the crew ran out"that's right, no food left"nine hours between meals.

  • Movie was single screen – The 757 is an older plane so in seat entertainment is I didn't engage in watching as my sound was crappy

  • Drink service was slow on a fully laden flight with with the poor woman was serving by herself

  • Cabin Safety
    757 Safety Card on flight
I love watching approach and landing but the guy by the window in my row was a closed window man. Airlines in Australia and NZ insist on window shades being open for landing saying its for safety. United has no such stipulation. I find it amazing that we can fly over amazing landscapes and passengers snap their shades closed to watch movies set in the same landscapes! He would peek out his window every now and again and when he did I would edge forward and stare outside. Finally he left the window shade for our last 45 seconds of flight.

When we finally landed in a stunningly smooth landing.  We got thanked for flying the friendly skies. my entire row laughed at this point. If nothing else, the last row bonded!

Luggage return was fairly prompt.  I got to the empty V Australia counter at 923pm for my 1020pm Sydney bound flight to find it was closed.  Thankfully the supervising agent re opened it for myself and two other weather delayed passengers.

Rating: 4/10 for my Flight 757. Seeing my average rating of all flights with United is out of ten -that's consistent with my overall United experience. I did like being on the 757 and am excited I managed to score another significant flight..now for 767 on a 767.

Okay Mr Jeff Smisek you apparently are producing a great airline---hurry up!

Dont do that here!

Got an upgrade to business class with United Airlines from Houston to New Orleans but my friend Betty didn't. She asked me to get her a Baileys. So I ordered a Baileys from the cabin attendant and "snuck" it down to Betty in the economy cabin.

The flight attendant was not amused. She told my friend Betty off in no uncertain terms and then came to me: "we dont allow our crockery into the coach cabin.

Am I banned from United business class for life?

United Flight 93

United is reinstating a United 93 as a flight starting 21 May 2011.

The flight used to be  operated by United from Newark to San Francisco using a Boeing 757 until September 11, 2001. On that date, approximately 46 minutes into the flight, hijackers diverted the plane towards Washington, D.C. The asumption is the target was the US Capitol or White House.

The passengers attempted to regain control of the plane from the hijackers  causing the plane to crash into fields in Pennsylvania, about 240 km  from  D.C. killing everybody.

A movie was made about the hijacking.

United removed Flight 93 after the September 11 hijackings.

The new flight number is a codeshare flight from Houston to San Jose CA and is actually Continental flight CO489. However UA 93 will appear in terminals. It is a 737.

I am not sure I feel okay about using this flight number.

United's Oil Consumption

According to Airways Magazine for June 2011, one out of every 350 barrels of oil produced in the world is used by the combined United-Continental airlines to fuel their 1262 planes!

Every increase in oil has gotta hurt.
Whats their long term plan for oil one wonders?
If peak oil theory is correct then they face a very expensive future as oil becomes even pricier.

ONE MILLION MILES

Dawn in the air
In the film: Up in the Air, George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a guy with the goal of earning one million miles with the one airline.

Today, I reached the milestone of one million miles in the air (1.6 million kilometres).  My life does not completely rsemble Clooney's movie character, however. I actually love being home and I like people but I do like my elite statuses:
  • United Airlines Gold
  • Virgin Blue Gold
  • Qantas Platinum

I measure my air life at a great flight tracking tool called FlightMemory.  My friend Tony, who passed away two years ago entered almost 500 flights into the Flight Memory system for me  as a Birthday present. RIP Tony, I miss you. So here is the summary:

You will note, that one million miles represents 40 times around the earth. It is the same distance to the moon and back - twice.

On Board Singapore Airlines A380- my first ever A380
To get to one million miles, I have flown 719 times between 1968 and 2011 on 73 airlines.  One third of my flights have been with Qantas and one tenth with United/Continental.
Some of the airlines I have flown are now:
  •  now broke and gone eg Ansett, Independence
  •  morphed eg BOAC into British Airways
  •  taken over eg Northwest, Impulse
  • much better eg Virgin Blue
  • much worse eg United
Most loved airlines are:  Emirates, Virgin America, Air New Zealand and Jetblue

Most hated airlines include:  Ryanair, Delta and United (the irony of having Gold Status with them)

I took this while on a 3 mile run from my LAX airport hotel

I have been transported to 177 airports in 34 countries on five continents. Interestingly, I have been to 46 countries in total in my life with some places visited by train or bus only. Not surprisingly,  two Australian  airports Sydney and Melbourne account for about 40% of all my airports visited. I have been to 54 airports only once. Airport highlights:

  • Most northern airport: GRY, Grimsey, Iceland
  • Most southern airport: IVC, Invercargill, New Zealand
  • Most eastern airport: NAN, Nadi, Fiji
  • Most western airport:  APW, Apia, Samoa
  • Most visited airport: MEL, Melbourne, Australia
  • Favourite airport: SIN, Singapore, Singapore
  • Most despised airport: LAX, Los Angeles, USA

I have used 48 different types of planes:-
All the boeings: 707, 717, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777
Airbus: 300, 310, 319, 320, 330, 340, 380
DC 8, 9, 10
Canadairs, Embraers, Fokkers, Saabs. I even been on a Zepplin.
NB Two of those planes, the 737 and 767 represent almost half of all the planes I have flown on!
The only planes not flown are Russian planes eg Tupolovs etc
I love the 777 and A380. I have loved my flights with six exceptions eg having flown through a thunderstorm in a Beechcraft- never again.

I am so fortunate to have seen the sights that I have seen:
Europe : Bruges, Mont St Michel, Taize, Venice, Tour Eiffel, Paris, WW1 Belgian war-fields, Krakow Market Square, Koln Dom, Bilbao, Reykjavik, Auschwitz
USA: Mt Rushmore, Devil's Tower, Cape Canaveral, climbing statue of Liberty, Grand Canyon,Yosemite, New York, Chicago, Boston, Portland ME, Portland, OR
Middle East: Bethlehem, Nazereth and Jerusalem,
Australia: Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo, Uluru, kangaroo Island, Coober Pedy, Brokjen Hill, Lake Pedder, The Pinnacles, Uluru, kakadu, Wave Rock,
Canada: CN Tower, Toronto Islands,
New Zealand: Milford Track, Queen Charlotte Sound
Tropical Islands: , Fiji, Hawaii, New Caledonia and Samoa.
Waterfalls: Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls, Russell Falls, Gullfoss
Musuems; Anne Frank House, British Museum, Frick Collection, Guggenheim, Holocaust Museum DC, In Flanders Fields Museum, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Musee d Orsay, NGA Canberra, Powerhouse Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, SFMOMA, Smithsonian, Vatican, Yad Vashem

The best part of the travel. Making and staying friends with people who live from the USA to Argentina, from New Zealand to New York, to South Africa Thanks for sharing the journey with me!

Finally, for the last ten years, I have been offsetting my travel buying trees to absorb carbon pollution. Not the best solution but a start. I now offset 110% of my carbon output.

So whats my goal? Another million miles? Not sure yet!

Qantas Hola Dallas, adios SFO

Qantas has announced they will now fly direct to Dallas Fort Worth from Sydney from May, 2011 using a Boeing 747-400ER. It is intended when Qantas finally get their 787s, they will be used on this route.

At 13 879 km (8,624 miles), this will be  the third-longest route in the world! The flights would take about 17 hours. There are three huge pluses about this:

  1. We can avoid LAX (my most hated airport) to get to the middle of the USA. DFW is a much more user friendly airport and is well connected to the rest of the USA and South America. I rank it seventh best in world!
  2. It will save time. Flights from Syd to DFW take 20-21 hours now via LAX. Currently Flights from SYD to NYC via LAX take 22-23 hours now. Via Dallas this could fall by an hour or two
  3. it connects passengers straight into the middle of the American Airlines network (Qantas and American are One World partners)

The downsides:

  1. the airline will drop San Francisco which has not generated enough corporate traffic
  2. the flight back will stop at Brisbane which will negate a little of the time saving. This is because the distance si too far and with the strong Pacific winds, there wont be enough fuel reserves to make it to Sydney non stop! Brisbane is 400km closer from Dallas (clearly there is not going to be much reserve fuel!

United are talking about deploying the new 787 on an Auckland-Houston flight, Suddenly, down under and Texas are looking closer!

Watch for Qantas opening flight deals and watch for United and Delta to offer deals between Dallas and Australia!

Lantastic! NZ-Aus -great way to travel!

My flight with my 70th airline (LAN Chile) almost came to blows in the Check In line - before it had started.

I get to stand in the priority check in queue because  of the curse/benefit of having flown too much!!. When I arrived at Auckland, New Zealand airport for my 430am Check in for  Sydney, I went straight to the Priority Line. As I stood there,   I observed the man in the regular line was eyeing me carefully. When the check in clerk gestured to me to move forward, he was off! He roared across with his luggage trolley, narrowly scraping in front of me. The check in  clerk gestured him to stop and waved me forward again. He kept zooming up to the counter glowering at me the whole way and demanding attention from the check in staff. Suffice to say, the clerk refused to serve him. He looked ready to punch me out as he slunk back to his place in the line.   I could feel his eyes burning holes in my back as i checked in!

Air New Zealand handled the check in on behalf of LAN. I appreciated their initiative in getting me an exit row seats. What was even nicer was that they seated me alone! (after defending my place in then line!)

The LAN plane was an A340 which I love. Its a great plane. Almost as nice as the A380 but its engines don't seem to blow up. It feels roomy (especially in 25A exit row!).

Being an airline from a Spanish speaking country, the crew were bilingual. They greeted each passenger in Spanish and/or English. I decided I would go Spanish! Every member of the crew from front door to my seat welcomed me!

Safety briefings included the crew standing silently while a cute cartoon briefing played. It was very well done.LAN appeared to take safety very seriously and their pre safety checks were quite thorough (compare to Uniteds' slap dash approach I blogged about a few weeks ago)
The pilot made his announcements in English and Spanish and wasted no time in getting the plane into the air. It was a superb take off on a grey morning

My only two negatives with my seat were:
  1. that the man who tried to head me off at the check in was just a couple of seats behind. He glared at me as he boarded!
  2.  that it was opposite the :facilities" which were well used after take off and before landing.

Breakfast was fresh fruit, a very fresh ham and cheese croissant and carrot cake. Alcohol (from Chile) and non alcoholic drinks were freely and generously available. Cabin Service was warm and friendly from all crew.

The Trans-Tasman route Between Australia and New Zealand is one of the more competitive in Asia Pacific. Multiple airlines have slugged it out on this route. Because i like ranking everything, This  list ranks the airlines on that sector based on my rating of my experiences with them:
These ratings are ONLY for the Trans Tasman (Aust-NZ) Service
  1. Emirates (amazing meals, great service, comfy planes, individual entertainment)  55/60
  2. LAN (good meals, v good service, comfy planes, individual entertainment)   51/60
  3. Air New Zealand (no meals to good meals, v good service)  : 50/60
  4. Qantas (ok meals, ok service, cramped planes, no ind entertainment)    39/60
  5. Pacific Blue/Virgin Blue (no food, ok service, cramped planes, no ind entertainment)   30/60
  6. Continental (ceased this sector)
  7. Jetstar (no food, ok service, cramped planes, no ind entertainment)  26/60
  8. United (ceased)
  9. Aerolíneas Argentinas (not flown but they have a horrendous rap)  ?/60

I would fly with LAN again! I just hope check in is in the afternoon! (and watch out for pushy  men at check in)

America's Worst Airlines

Having just had a horror United Airlines recently, I found this report very fascinating. US News used information produced by the UN Department of Transport and produced an excellent slide show.  Best to worst
  1. Hawaiian Airlines (excellent on time performance and customer satisfaction ratings)
  2. AirTran (high customer satisfaction and good baggage handling)
  3. JetBlue (great customer satisfaction)
  4. Southwest ( lowest % of customer complaints)
  5. Continental  (consistently good for six years)
  6. Frontier (similar rating as Continental)
  7. US Airways (scores have been improving)
  8. American (the worst airine for baggage losses)
  9. Alaska (good on-time performance but passenger dissatisfaction)
  10. United (with the lowest passenger satisfaction score)
  11. Delta (most delays and most passenger complaints)
From my own experience, this is my current rating of the airlines in the USA (notice some overlaps!)

  1. Virgin America-everything about VA is class-hope they can hang onto this as they expand
  2. JetBlue
  3. AirTran-
  4. Southwest Airlines-
  5. Frontier Airlines
  6. Continental
  7. Alaska Airlines
  8. United Airlines-
  9. American Airlines
  10. US Airways
  11. Delta
See my list of best airlnes and worst.

    United Redeems themselves!

This sunset shot taken en route from LAX to Pittsburgh.

This was my 53rd United Airlines flight and my 60th flight at LAX!.

This was a superb flight...pretty much 5 out of 5!
    Friendly staff, clean plane.

    Thanks Rob and team!

This flight was in huge is contrast with yesterday's abysmal United Airlines flight from Syd to Los Angeles (check out review).

    Thats it United!

    Dear United Airlines

Not flying with you between Australia and the USA again (I still have to fly home with you!) because:
    • your 747 is so old and so tatty, it looks like no one cares. So much so the woman next to me was nervous that the maintenance was being done in the same slip shod fashion.
    • your staff were very unfriendly They didn't care and resented the passengers being there. The Cabin crew chatted through the safety briefing. They gossiped loudly in the galley when people were trying to sleep. They visibly read magazines when on duty (some airlines are a little more subtle). They served the meals resentfully (although in fairness the meals were so bad, it was probably resentment at having to serve them to humans)
    • the meals served in the  Economy cabin are miserly. Compare your meals with Qantas and Air New Zealand on the same sector. eg United's breakfast offering was only fruit or scrambled eggs and a small croissant compared to Qantas who provide scrambled egg or omelet, Cereal, jam for the croissant/muffin and yoghurt. In addition both Qantas and Air New Zealand have a snacking arrangement through the flight eg Qantas hands out a snack pack to every passenger.
    • The standard of the aforementioned United breakfast. It was the worst I have ever been served on that sector. Why bother serving it? Despite hunger I and the passenger next to me left it almost untouched. Tasteless eggs served in an unappealing lump with a stale croissant and butter
    • you are still giving Economy passengers one video screen in each section with no choice of shows for 13.5 hours? For crying out loud! Real airlines now have individual entertainment units. For example, while you have 12 music channels, Air NZ has SIX PAGES of radio and CD choices
Your staff and management need to fly as passengers on a real airline like Qantas, Air NZ or V Australia on that sector and see how it can be done so much better.

To add insult to injury was the video telling me I was on one of the world's great airlines. Having just flown Emirates, that made me laugh! Emirates are definitely one of the world's great airlines. Not United!

Today's Trip gets 2 out of 5, bringing my overall United Airlines rating to 3.4 (Same sector competitors: Air New Zealand 4.9 Qantas 4.8).

See my previous reviews of travel with United for Melbourne-Sydney-Los Angeles -Chicago:

Finally, check out how to do it properly: This is my review of Emirates Auckland to Sydney on the Airbus A380

    United Unites

Readers of Martin J's Travel Life will know I have very low regard for United Airlines. They are not my worst airline but close. See my last devastating review of United.

I have just flown United 13 times in March and they were scarily impressive. I was wondering how much of this is because of the United Continental merger?

United Airlines and Continetal are merging to form the world's biggest airline. The merged airline will be called United. In other words adios Continental name but the planes post merger will carry the Continental colours and logo (see picture from the merger website). A number of my planes were in this logo format on my last trips.

United and Continental are continuing to fly separately but clearly lots of "back room" integration is going on.

When merged, the airline will serve 371 destinations in 59 countries (although 223 are in the USA). 5811 flights depart daily on the two airlines and 144 million people a year fly UnitedContinental.

Let me declare, I really like Continental. In July, they were my sixth favourite airline. I wonder which culture will survive the merger. Praying its Continental. The management of the new merged entity are praying they will survive at all in the tough world of aviation. Merging may mean any name survives for a little longer as they compete against the other mega giants. Delta flies 161million passengers a year, Southwest who are taking over AirTran101 million and American 85 million.

The question is who will American merge with? USAir? (51million) Alaska- 15m? JetBlue22m? British 32m?

    85 days in the air

I just ticked over total flying time of 85 days or   2040:40 hours!  I was tickled with that number 2040:40!!!!   This has taken me  647 flights. I am on the way to the magic one million miles - about 1.6 million kilometres! Over half of those miles have been with one airline: Qantas. A third has been with United Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, American Airlines, Air New Zealand and Continental Airlines combined. The remainder is split between 60 other airlines!

    The Skies get friendlier

This is Part Three of a Three Part description of my flight with United from Mel to Syd to LAX to ORD (Chicago). This covers the longest hop from Sydney to Chicago.
Part One: Across the Pacific the "Friendly Way"
    Part Two: Mel-Syd unfriendly-way

My Craft foreground-the other United plane heads to SFO
After a brief sojourn in the Air New Zealand Lounge (the heavenly Koru Club), we boarded our Los Angeles, California bound 747 pictured right at Sydney airport.

At 105pm, there was a Business class seat left so it looked like my upgrade for the 13 hour cross Pacific hop was happening. BUT at 110pm, it had been filled by a business fare paying passenger- I still had my Emergency Exit seat!  Really appreciated the service of the lounge staff as they tried to get me the upgrade...Thanks team.

Welcome aboard was good and staff more engaged and way way way more friendly (what happened on the last flight???) but again a lack of hands or help to guide people to their seats. I saw one woman approach a flight attendant because someone was in her seat. "tell him to move" replied the attendant !

On the other side, one passenger later demanded the cabin crew suspend meal service so he could use the restroom. Upon being told to use the other restrooms he abused the FA. Shame you cant throw some passengers overboard.

Me (Martin J Cowling) on Board the 747
The passengers around me included a large contingent of navy reservists from USNS Mercy which had been assisting Indonesians with medical supplies and attention. Dave, the  guy next to me a firefighter from North Carolina was  heading home after  a very powerful period of Service in various Indonesian communities and a brief R & R in Darwin. Dave is hoping to come back and vacation in Australia and or NZ (Hey Dave, I hope you made your Chicago connection!)

Takeoff over Sydney's Cronulla Beach was stunning.

Beverage service brought another drink and those mini pretzels  followed by a choice of  Asian Chicken or tortellini was adequate. On FA recommendation, I went for the pasta. To my surprise United still do effectively three meal runs with a middle of the night meal service. (Qantas gives out a snack Bag and bottled water before switching off the lights. In the middle of the night, United gave us a sandwich with a non-descript meat plus coke slaw and  a bland pecan cookie. This was followed by a drink service and then a rubbish collection service. The effect of all of this was to wake people up.

This added to the restlessness on the flight.  After each movie, for example,  people would get up, wander and talk. Individual entertainment  units do keep people on their seats and docile. On top of this was that  the lights don't seem as dim as they do on other crossings I have had -and people chatted a lot making sleep harder.

Breakfast (pictured left) was the worst I have ever been given on a plane. The eggs tasted worse than they looked and the blob of yellow dumped on the plate did not look good! The sausage was bland, the mushrooms had some flavour but looked sad. The croissant was awful. I could have had fruit as well but I was starving.

Touchdown in LA was Perfect!! Thanks Pilots! (110%!!!!) And we were early!!

    On this segment;
Welcome aboard: 7.5 out Of ten
Cabin Crew: 7.5 out Of ten
Beverage / Meal Service: 4 out of ten
    Entertainment: 2 out of ten
Farewell from plane: 8 out of ten

So on board this segment: 29 out of 50

Total score for my United airlines experience so far: 96 out of 150...64%

Customs and immigration were not so bad. The good thing about flying United Airlines as opposed to Qantas or Air New Zealand is that most of the passengers are Americans so the line for "Visitors" at US immigration is far shorter!!

I had my boarding pass so quickly re entered security, grabbed some food and had time to check the net including finding another negative review of UA840

Boarded the third segment of United 840 to find the purser from the SYD to LAX segment was travelling to Chicago as a passenger (she told me she was going to Europe). My friend Dave (see previous post) was turned away at the door of the aircraft as it was  a completely full flight (I did note there were quite a few crew travelling for free as passengers. Whats the best priority here I wonder?)

Staff on this flight were incredibly friendly, pro active, polite and went out of their way to help. The contrast to my Melbourne-Sydney flight was palpable.

United flight 840  starts in Melbourne, Australia and finishes in Chicago, USA  travelling via Los Angeles. En route, it changes planes and crews twice.  To me, it seems strange that the one flight does not have to have the same craft or crew? What makes it the same flight?

Meal service consisted of a free drink and the sale of snack boxes. I bought the Eat for Good snack box. It impressed me for three reasons:

    1. The contents are on the healthier end but not that exciting...after 15 hours of travel, I would have killed for fresh fruit,
    2. $1 from each box is donated to Feeding America®
    3. packaging was designed by an 18 year old high schooler engaged in a development program in Chicago

Not so impressive is the claim that 1 in 6 Americans goes hungry. One has got to question what is going on in a country when this is the situation?

    We landed early---again!

Welcome aboard: 8 out Of ten
Cabin Crew: 10 out Of ten
Beverage / Meal Service: 6.5 out of ten
    Entertainment: 4 out of ten
Farewell from plane: 7.5 out of ten

So on board this segment: 36 out of 50

Total score for my United airlines experience: 132 out of 200...66% NB I did not check bags. My last Qantas flight across the Pacific, I gave 95% to. My Air New Zealand flight on the same route got 96%. United has a long way to go to match the service, food, aircraft amenities, cleanliness and entertainment of its competitors on this sector.  See my list of top 21 carriers.

    Would I fly them again?
For a substantial price discount? Yes.
For the same price? Only if I knew I could get an upgrade to business class.

    MEL-SYD the Unfriendly way

This is Part 2 of my August 7th, 2010 journey from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia to Chicago, Illinois, USA flying United Airlines. Part 1 here.

I now boarded my 747 Jumbo at Melbourne airport- the blue colouring on the 747 looks great -you got to admit the 747 as a plane is a beautiful looking aircraft (While a delight to fly, I think the A380 looks ugly).  Plane was overall clean but economy looked tatty. This is only the third time I have flown a jumbo between  Melbourne and Sydney (out of over 100 flights between the two cities)

Up to this point all my dealings had been with United Australian ground crew and they had all been superb.  On board things changed. The welcome aboard was perfunctory and dismissive. I did get told where my seat was. As a very frequent flyer Qantas staff will personally welcome me by name. United? A grumpy: "across and right"

On board, the Cabin Crew were mostly in the galleys chatting. I helped one elderly woman lift her bag up as the crew watched-  no offence but United crews all look old!! Qantas and Air NZ have a mix of age groups. I guess seniority means that only people over 50 will pull the Aussie flights more often. Maybe that's why they could not help passengers with boarding or is it a United thing not to help?

The Texan guy sitting next to me (wearing an Akubra) had flown Houston-Los Angeles -Syd-Mel arriving into Mel Thurs. He had been to a two day Conference (Thursday and Friday) and was now flying back on the Saturday!!

Me: so did you see anything of Australia?
    Texan: nope
    Me: been before?
    Texan: nope
Me: that's a Shame to come all that way and not see anything?
    Texan:shrug

At least he got to the Akubra shop in his hotel! Each to their own I suppose, but surely Melbourne one of the world most liveable cities is worth an extra day after the Conference.
For the safety briefing the Flight Attendant (FA) looked at her nails. I was interested that the crew did not even point to the nearest emergency exits! I thought every safety demo did that! Perception is everything and I definitely feel a little safer with Qantas, Air NZ and many other airlines who look like they take it seriously. The FA did notice the woman who got out of her seat to take her jacket off as we taxied!

As we sat on the tarmac waiting to take off, I asked the FA sitting opposite me , how her visit had been. She shrugged: I've been here like 20 times.
I asked where she stayed in Sydney? "at the Novotel"', she said.
Oh I said "near the airport?"
She said "I don't know they just take us there "
End of conversation. Welcome aboard the friendly skies!?

My experience Is that United take offs are much more harried than Qantas. -its as if the Pilots are more impatient to take off or maybe they are used to the American airports which are very frenetic? This one was a nice take off albeit bouncy with the strong winds. I enjoy United's Channel 9 where you can listen to the Pilot talk to the Air Traffic Controllers. The Australian ATC staff sounded so calm and professional. Well done and thank you for looking after us.

Meal (?) service consisted of orange juice, a choice of another drink and a packet of mini pretzels (made in Ohio). More than Virgin gives for free for the same route but less than Qantas offerings. With the plane only  a quarter full, meal service was over quickly and cabin crew could get back to chatting in the galley.

    On Board Entertainment System:
United has still not upgraded their system in economy -so we have little roof mounted TV screens with one video program and 12 music channels. Qantas, Air New Zealand and V all have on board seat back entertainment systems with multiple channels.

    Summary:
Welcome aboard: 3 out Of ten
Cabin Crew: 1 out Of ten
Beverage / Meal Service: 6 out of ten
    Entertainment: 2 out of ten
Farewell from plane: 4 out of ten

So total for MEL-SYD  16 out of 50
(I gave the ground part 50 out of 50 so total score 66 out of 100!)
As I went through security i chatted to a Qantas stewardess who was also off to LA (working). She smilingly rebuked me for flying United saying "you will be back"
After this flight, she may be right.

Part Three of this trip shares my experience of SYD to LAX.

Across the Pacific the "Friendly Way"

The flights between Australia and the USA are considered to amongst the longest non stops in the world. For example at 7921 miles (12, 748 kilometres), the 15.25 hour Los Angeles to Melbourne is the fifth longest scheduled flight in the world

I have flown from Australia to the West Coast of the USA/Canada 21 times and I have flown back 17 times. (No, I have not stayed in the US 4 times...thats the consequence of my favourite ticket:- the Round the World Ticket.

So in total I have had 38 Pacific crossings by air.

I have done a crossing in either direction five times with Air New Zealand, once with Air Canada, twice with Continental (who no longer fly it) and twice with the friendly skies (United). This means Qantas 26 crossings!

Today Crossing Number 39 is with United...I have not flown them on this sector since 1995!

Having got a super cheap fare, I used my points to apply for an upgrade to Business and thats where the fun began. I was waitlisted for the upgrade, then it was confirmed! Yippee! When I got to the airport, however, I found out that I had lost it again! There were now 12 passengers waiting for 3 seats. The nice thing was that the Melbourne Check in supervisor personally came down to apologise to me for the lack of upgrade. She did say that there was a possibility out of SYD still (1 in 4 chance!)

    Booking 10/10
    Web-site 10/10
    Reservations Telephone staff  10/10
    Check In:  United 10/10

Security: United 10/10 -  I got an Express Pass which got me through security in a few minutes...only glitch was when my Vegemite (savoury spread used by Australians on toast) was confiscated under the liquid, gels, rule.  I knew about perfumes, water, moisturiser etc but vegemite!!!!!!!!! A completely sealed jar!!! Apparently one can smuggle explosives in it! But up to now, I did not consider how dangerous the world considers Australian Vegemite!

United have their own lounge for its frequent frequent flyers. Its adequate with free wifi but NOT a patch on Qantas! Still free food and drinks before a flight is appreciated. Staff were very friendly and welcoming! Thanks team!

Breakfast was rubbery sausages, runny scrambled eggs, nice fresh fruit, toast (honeys, jams and vegemite!!!!!!)

Check out Part Two where I discover the not so friendly skies with United on the first leg of my flight
